This summer is
off to a busy start for us at RBCS. I'm on a world tour. I just got
back from Paris, Minsk, and Beirut. In Paris and Beirut, I helped a
client improve their test design and test management practices. In
Minsk, I delivered training on risk-based testing and talked about
test estimation at the excellent SQA Days conference.
This week, I'm
in Copenhagen for ISTQB meetings. There are exciting things brewing
for the ISTQB, and I look forward to sharing more details about how
those will affect our training offerings once they are officially
announced.
Next week, I'll
be in Milan, once again addressing risk-based testing. I look forward
to visiting Italy again. More details are below.
In July, I'll
be back in Bangalore to speak at Unicom's Next Generation Testing
conference again. I have a jam-packed agenda, and you can learn more
about all that I'm doing there in this newsletter. On the way back,
I'll stop in Dublin to work with a client on test design and test
management.
Rounding out
this active summer, I'll be at the second annual ASTQB conference in
Washington, DC. I hope to see many of my US friends and clients
there, as it will be an interesting and content-filled conference.
Again, you can find more details below.
This summer,
our free webinar series continues. You can find more
information on the upcoming topics below.
Finally, if you
are in an Agile team, you might be interested in the ISTQB Agile
Extension syllabus. We have full support for people who choose
training for this exam, with public, virtual, private, and e-learning
options.
Welcome to
summer. I hope yours is an interested and exciting as ours is shaping
up to be.
Regards,
Rex Black,
President

The
Defect Life Cycle and the Software Development Life Cycle
By Rex Black
Mistakes lead
to the introduction of defects (also called bugs). As I personally am
aware, like all human beings I can make mistakes at any point in
time, no matter what I might be working on. So it is on projects,
where the business analyst can put a defect into a requirements
specification, a tester can put a defect into a test case, a
programmer can put a defect into the code, a technical writer can put
a defect into the user guide, and so forth. Any work product can and
often will have defects because any worker can and will make
mistakes!
Now, I like to
drink good wine, and I've collected bottles from around the world on
my travels. Some I've stashed away for years, waiting for the right
time to drink them, which always comes sooner or later. Some of these
bottles have gotten a lot more valuable over the years. Odd as this
will sound, in just a few ways, bugs are like wine. They definitely
get more expensive with age, taking more effort and thus incurring
more cost the longer they are in the system. Also, sooner or later
most bugs need to be fixed. However, it's definitely not a good idea
to leave bugs lying around-or perhaps crawling around-in a cellar,
and they're certainly not appetizing!

Green Tip
The
EPA estimates that up to 1.5 billion gallons of water are wasted each
year to irrigate landscaping. Reduce evaporation by watering in the
early morning and mulching around gardens and shrubs. If possible,
install a drip irrigation system, which uses 50% less water than a
normal in-ground sprinkler system.
